Stand-in coach for the Lady Braves, Bernie Harrower declared Saturday night’s win on the Supercats as the best in his time since being back at the club.
After a six-point loss to Launceston at home on Friday night, the Lady Braves faced a team unbeaten on its court this season.
Harrower said the 16-point victory in Geelong was achieved through sheer hard work and many contributors in the 84-68 triumph.
“Leading into the game at Geelong we spoke about being ready to play and being motivated for the contest.
The Lady Braves were “switched on” from tip-off and were able to dictate tempo for a lot of the contest.
Defensive pressure and better execution in attack became key themes for Bendigo’s line-up on the rebound from defeat.
“Apart from the first quarter against Launceston the defence was reasonably good,” said Harrower.
“Against Geelong there was a lapse for a few minutes in the third when challenged, but the girls were able to regain control.
“In any match the opposition will come at you at some stage.
“We lost our way for a couple of minutes, but then lifted our workrate,” he said of Bendigo’s play at both ends of the court.”
Looking ahead to the round 14 trip across Bass Strait, Harrower said quicker movement of the ball would be crucial.
“The tempo we played at against Geelong was great.
“There were a lot of the right passes as the right time.”
The win at Geelong showcased the scoring power in the Lady Braves line-up.
Stacia Robertson, Elyse Penaluna and Kerryn Harrington all stepped up to support the in-form Kelly Wilson.
“Multiple contributors in attack and a strong emphasis on team defence will always make it difficult for any opponent,” said Harrower.
“The girls have shown they can beat any team when at their best.”
The Lady Braves play in Hobart on Friday from 6pm and then head north for Saturday’s clash in Launceston. Tip-off is at 6.30pm.
