Related: Court hears of chaotic crash scene
BOTH men charged after brothers Fred and Gary Whearem were killed in a crash on the Calder Highway at Glenalbyn have pleaded guilty.
Jamie McPherson, 70, of Violet Town, pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing death in the Melbourne Supreme Court on Thursday over the crash on January 4, 2014.
Co-accused Shayne Sargent, 42, of Wedderburn, last month pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death.
The men have been remanded in custody to appear at a pre-sentencing hearing at the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on July 23.
At a committal hearing last year, the court heard McPherson and Sargent had driven in separate vehicles terrorising the Whearems as they drove on the Calder Highway south east of Wedderburn.
At one stage the two accused wedged the Whearem car between them, causing Fred Whearem to call triple 0.
The car ran into a tree shortly after, killing both brothers, aged 55 and 31.
McPherson was in a relationship with Gary Whearem’s ex-partner, who was also the mother of his children.
The court heard there was “considerable animosity” between the two families, including threats made by McPherson to bomb and shoot Gary Whearem.
McPherson did not appear in court last month as he was believed to be in hospital with a life-threatening illness.
However, he was expected to appear at the hearing in Bendigo later this month.
