The wind farm, located 25 km south of Charlton, will supply power to the ACT and is expected to generate the lowest-cost wind energy in Australia at $81.50 per megawatt hour.
Wind energy will play a key role in the ACT meeting its target of sourcing 90 per cent of Canberra's electricity from renewable energy by 2020.
Minister for the Environment Simon Corbell helped turn the first sod and said wind is the lowest-cost renewable energy available.
“(Wind) will play a big role in the decarbonisation of the ACTs electricity supply. It will contribute approximately three-quarters of the ACT’s 90 per cent of renewable energy target,” he said.
“Managed by Windlab’s global operation centre in Canberra, the Coonooer Bridge Wind Farm is the first of three wind farms that won feed-in tariff entitlements in the ACT’s wind auction.
“The ACT’s progressive renewable energy policies, including the award winning reverse auctions for solar and wind, have positioned the ACT as a leader in the renewable energy sector.”
As part of its successful bid for the large-scale wind auction, Windlab has established a global operations hub in Canberra to manage its Australian and international wind energy interests.
