About 222 people have vowed to give up booze for the month of July in support of the hospital.  

Graeme Stewart of AFS and Associates along with Bendigo Health’s Doctor Robin Monro, Robyn Lindsay and Trudy Haines will fly the flag as ambassadors. 

The online campaign requires participants to go without alcohol for an entire month, while raising money for Bendigo Health's oncology services. 

Last year, Dry July raised more than $70,000. This year's total will go towards refurbishing the cancer patient accommodation units in Nolan Street. 

Bendigo Health Foundation director Jane Anderson said Dry July was a wonderful concept that continued to gain momentum. 

“This is an amazing start to the month. We're very impressed by the number of community members signing up for Dry July and the generosity of their supporters," Ms Anderson said. 

"By committing to being dry for a month, not only are participants doing something good for their own health and encouraging a healthy attitude to alcohol consumption, they are helping us care for our cancer patients.

"By sponsoring participants, you also support our patients and their needs."

Mr Stewart said the task would prove a challenge but he was confident on making it through to the end of the month. 

"I am not a big drinker but I like to have a beer after work on a Friday night," he said. 

Mr Stewart said he had raised more than $3000 for the cause. 

“The patients go through such horrible things, anything that can help them out is good," he said. 

Ms Anderson the Nolan Street campus was a "home away from home" for regional patients.

"They are in desperate need of an upgrade and this refurbishment will make a big difference to the hundreds of patients from across our regions and beyond who access the units each and every year," she said. 

"A heartfelt thank you to all our Dry July participants and their supports."
