The centre was expected to close July 12 due to operating losses of about $200,000 each year.
However Discovery Board of Management chair Katherine Legge said things now looked positive for the centre's short term survival after funding commitments from public and private donors.
"We'll be able to last a year we believe," she said.
"But we want ongoing stability so we have to show we can get funds annually, not just as a one off."
The announcement came as Champions IGA pledged $35,000 over two years to the centre.
Champions IGA owner Brendon Goddard said he was inspired to make the donation after seeing news of Big Hill Year 2 student Will Miller's petition to save Discovery.
"That caught our attention. It goes to show you only need the power of one," he said.
The store's contribution will purchase memberships to the centre for all Big Hill Primary students.
Mr Goddard's visit to deliver the first cheque was the first time he had been to the centre.
"You come in here and see kids having a good time and that's what we're all here for; the development of our children," he said.
“It's about learning and it's about fun, which is the best way to learn."
Mr Goddard said he hoped other local businesses would get on board.
We're hoping this will be a start for others to help out," he said.
Ms Legge said a crowd funding campaign would begin shortly.
The centre's board will be reconstituted this week. The board members resigned in early June.
