WEDDERBURN man Shayne Sargent, 42, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death over a double fatality on the Calder Highway at Glenalbyn.
Sargent appeared in the Melbourne Supreme Court on Monday where he offered the guilty plea over the crash on January 4, 2014.
He will appear at a pre-sentencing plea hearing in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on July 23.
Co-accused Jamie McPherson, 70, of Violet Town, did not appear in court as he is in hospital with a life-threatening illness.
A warrant was issued but a judge will determine on Tuesday afternoon how to proceed with his charges.
The two men were charged over the crash south east of Wedderburn which killed brothers Fred and Gary Whearem.
A committal hearing in Bendigo in September last year heard Sargent was passing cars in his gold Holden Commodore on the Calder Highway in a dangerous manner prior to the crash.
The prosecution alleged Sargent and McPherson were in separate cars terrorising and intimidating the Whearem vehicle, including “sandwiching” the car between theirs.
Four witnesses described the scene after the crash and spoke of seeing a “puff of smoke” on the road before the Whearem’s car collided with a tree.
