The Golf Victoria event has been staged since 1972, with Quarry Hill joining Belvoir Park (1984 and 1996), Rochester (1995 and 2004), Elmore (1992 and 2006), Maldon (2008) and Marong (2011) as Central Victorian district clubs to host the tournament.
“We’re very excited to get the opportunity to host the event,’’ Quarry Hill Golf Club president Stewart Davey said.
“We see this as a great opportunity to showcase our course to wider Victoria.
“We’re proud that our course, being a gem in the centre of Bendigo, has been selected.
“In recent times we’ve come under threat for housing development, but holding an event like this is testament as to why it should remain a public place.”
More than 100 players from across the state will converge on Quarry Hill for the 36-hole tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
“We have a very strong field, with a third of the field playing off handicaps of under eight,’’ Davey said.
“We have players representing clubs from Beechworth, Rutherglen, Dimboola, the Grampains, Balmoral and Torquay.
“Locally, we’ll have players from Marong, while our club members have volunteered their services to help with the running of the event.
“It’s been two years of planning for the club and we have the course in fantastic condition.”
The Victorian Sandgreen Championship has been a successful tournament for Bendigo district golfers over the past 30 years.
Axedale’s Lex Johnstone won the title in 1984 at Belvoir Park, Neangar Park’s Tim Daykin was successful in 1994 at Inverleigh and in 2001 at Bandiana.
Axedale’s Kris Mueck, who is now a touring professional, won the 2009 Victorian Sandgreen Championship at Dimboola by four shots.
Other high profile players to have their name on the Victorian Sandgreen Championship honour roll include, Mike Clayton (1975), Stephen Allan (1992 and 1993), Brad Lamb (1996), Ben Meyers (1997 and 1998), Marcus Both (1999) and Craig Scott (2002 and 2003).
The tournament starts with a 4BBB on Friday, while the main event will be played over 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
Players will tee off on Saturday and Sunday from 8am.
The tournament’s major sponsor is the City of Greater Bendigo, with support also coming from WFI and the Pepper Pot.
