The ‘Top To Tip’ journey will roll from the summit of Mount Wycheproof at 9am.

Coatsworth’s destination is the northernmost point in the country.

The gruelling trek is all about raising funds and awareness for the Baker Institute and Diabetes Australia.

“The plan is to ride at least 150 kilometres a day,” Coatsworth said.

“The roll down Mount Wycheproof is likely to be the easiest part of the ride,” he said of being cheered on by family, friends and the Wycheproof townsfolk.

Original plans were to cycle to Cairns where Coatsworth had coached the Saints in northern Queensland a few footy seasons ago.

“Then I thought why stop there (in Cairns) and looked at going on to Cape York.”

All of a sudden the trek distance went from just over 2700km to 3692km.

His support crew on Top To Tip will be girlfriend Casey Tonkin, along with David Rumbold and masseuse Nadia Bish.

Although he is based  in Kangaroo Flat, Coatsworth has spent many seasons playing for  Wycheproof-Narraport in the North Central Football League. He also had a stint as the club’s senior playing coach.

He “pulled the pin” on playing footy with the Demons earlier this season.

A highlight of Coatsworth’s journey will be a fund-raiser and family day at Cairns Saints Football Club on August 8.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago , Coatsworth said his life changed dramatically.

“The lifestyle change was the most challenging.

“It’s not just about checking blood sugar levels, but what I can eat and drink.

“Accepting change was not easy.

Coatsworth’s target is to raise $100,000 to be shared by Baker Institute and Diabetes Australia.
