During a six-week residency at the VAC, Charles documented his repetitive walks around the streets of Bendigo, and even his routine steps within the building.
Daily actions and interactions are now overlaid, fragmented and abstracted in a series of engaging video works.
The artist has also filmed individuals reciting the English alphabet and then compressed the footage into a single video. Faces and voices merge to create light and sound that unifies the participants, exposing their commonalities and erasing their differences.
Relative Nothing documents the artist’s experience of being "out-of-place" and his interactions with people and spaces.
Perhaps it is only when we are taken out of our familiar environment that our everyday, mundane actions seem remarkable.
