Kangaroo Flat fire diverts traffic

MOTORISTS are being diverted at Kangaroo Flat as CFA crews work to control a natural gas fire.

It's believed the fire, near the corner of Mackenzie Street West and Olympic Parade, will take about an hour to put out.

Captain of Kangaroo Flat CFA Andrew Purdy said there was no risk to residents or property.

“It’s a controlled burn now,” he said.

He confirmed workmen had punctured a gas line while working on site but was unsure what had ignited the flame.

He said firemen were working to make sure nearby power poles were not damaged from radiant heat while the power company worked to disconnect the gas..

More to come.
