THE Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning approved the culling of 2180 eastern grey kangaroos in the Macedon Ranges in the past year.
The cull included 1330 kangaroos destroyed in the Kyneton area alone.
A total of 79 culling permits were issued.
Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network spokesperson Fiona Corke said wildlife rescuers were horrified at the figure.
"Two thousand out of 10,000 (across Victoria) culled in the Macedon Ranges is extremely high and we will fiercely fight any further culling," Ms Corke said.
"We remind people that kangaroos are a protected species - to kill a kangaroo without the appropriate authority is a prosecutable offence."
A DELWP spokesperson said that kangaroo numbers usually corresponded to seasonal conditions, which were currently favourable.
"Wherever possible, DELWP encouraged land managers and landholders to manage wildlife interactions without disturbing wildlife (such as exclusion by fencing or netting)," the spokesperson said.
