THE Ballarat Sovereigns under-19 team fought gallantly in their preliminary final on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough to win a spot in the Victorian Netball League grand final.

The team of young guns went head-to-head with the Geelong Cougars at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, with the the winner earning the right to take on the City West Falcons next week.
Golden Square sisters Ashleigh and Abbey Ryan played in the match as did Kangaroo Flat defender Zoe Davies.
Roos' mid-court player Bridget Murray missed the match due to injury.
It was a closely fought battle in the opening stages of the match, with the scores tied at 11-all at the first break.
The Cougars kicked into gear in the second and third quarters, opening up an eight goal margin heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Sovereigns worked hard in the dying stages of the match, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
The final score was 47-40.
Abbey Ryan played in the goal shooter position, shooting 15 goals from 24 attempts.
The Cougars will now face Sandhurst star Brooke Bolton's City West Falcons in the final.
The game will be played on June 13 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre at 4pm.
