The Country line-up, which included Bendigo Pioneers onballer Tommy Cole, was down by a point at 30 seconds to play.
A brilliant passage of play that began at half-back was capped by a marking being taken by Jy Simpkin in the goalsquare just before the final siren sounded.
Simpkin’s goal clinched a 73-68 win.
Cole kicked one of Victoria Country’s 11 goals.
Favourites to win the division one title, Victoria Country heads to Perth to play Western Australia next Sunday.
WA kicked off the titles by beating South Australia.
