Crews attended a burn off about 5.30pm on Saturday after receiving reports it was creating dark-coloured smoke.
Senior station officer Tim Fitzgerald said the fire at an industrial property in Finn Street was a registered burn off.
He said it contained an assortment of "general rubbish" and was extinguished as soon as possible when it became apparent it contained some plastic.
"It included old doors, timber and a small amount of plastic material," he said.
"When it was reported about the type of material in the fire, the fire brigade attended and extinguished it quickly.
"Once it was out, the smoke stopped immediately."
The fire was reported when residents noticed dark smoke billowing in a north-northwest direction towards California Gully and Jackass Flat.
The Bendigo Fire Brigade attended and extinguished the fire within minutes.
No fines will be issued as a result of the fire.
The property was near the Thales factory and opposite O'Keefe Street in North Bendigo and has recently been vacated and sold.
A nearby resident, who lives about 1.5 kilometres from the site of the fire, said it sent an acrid smell over large residential areas in northern Bendigo.
"It was really thick, heavy column of smoke," he said.
"My experience in emergency services told me it was probably something serious, it was a very dark deep black colour.
"It was a horrible, really dirty catch-in-your-throat type of smell."
The resident said it was billowing for about half an hour and was noticed by a large number of residents in the city's north.
"It blew across Holdsworth Road towards Averys Road and that area of Bendigo," he said.
