WHILE Peter Greaney is away for a few weeks on a well-earned rest, I will be filling in for him as the inspector for the Bendigo Policing Area.

This week I would like to highlight our upcoming police careers night being held on May 28, at the Bendigo Police Station.
We have already had an overwhelming response, so much so that that this one is now fully booked and we are currently arranging for further sessions.
These nights will provide a unique opportunity for those people who have been considering their future careers.
Some may have just finished school or university studies or some may be considering a complete career change.
Personally, "the job", as many police refer to it, has provided me with a satisfying and ever challenging career.
I joined some 25 years ago after working for a couple of years in retail and also making and delivering pizzas of a night time!
I recall speaking to a policeman who was a regular pizza customer, who explained to me at the time that his job was exciting and different each day.
He got to lock up the "bad guys" and make the community feel that bit safer.
He was a detective and I had a lot of respect for him.
I thought 'that's something I could enjoy doing... and get paid to do it'.
After five months of intense training at the Victoria Police Academy in Melbourne, I proudly marched out of the gates wearing the blue uniform, hoping everything I learnt would be put into practice.
Being nervous on that first day on the street was an understatement. Our current new recruits working at Bendigo all vary in age, come from diverse backgrounds and have different life experiences.
I encourage anyone who is thinking about policing as a career to register for our careers information nights on 5448 1300.
As the current session is fully booked, your details will be placed on file and you will be contacted when we arrange a further date.
These information nights will have police officers from different specialised units talking about their jobs, as well as presentations giving an outline of what to expect while living at the police academy during training.
It is truly a rewarding career and I urge people to consider it.
I look forward to seeing our potential recruits there on the night. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
