VICTORIA has adopted a new number plate slogan, urging drivers to “stay alert, stay alive” on our roads.
Assistant treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips announced the slogan in Bendigo yesterday.
It is the first time a road safety message will appear on number plates in Victoria.
The slogan will be rolled out once existing stock of plates are used up, replacing “Victoria – the place to be”.
VicRoads expects the plate will appear on cars from early next year.
Mr Rich-Phillips said the slogan was chosen from thousands of public submissions and with advice from the state’s road safety agencies.
He said it was targeting one of the fundamentals of road safety.
“This new message is very much targeted at that key issue, which everything else follows on from.
“Whether it’s speeding, texting, all of those issues go back to staying alert of the road.”
Mr Rich-Phillips said he hoped all road users would receive the message.
“We’re encouraging drivers to be alert, we are encouraging pedestrians to be alert, other road users to be alert.
“We hope Victorians respond to this.”
