During 2001, the Bendigo Advertiser displayed an advertisement calling for local volunteers.
Mr Docksey applied as a way to give back to his community and was accepted as an ambassador for Bendigo Tourism.
His role involved greeting tourists and giving them a street walk tour, as well as travelling to regional Victorian towns such as Shepparton and Castlemaine.
In these towns, Mr Docksey would speak highly and proudly of Bendigo, as well as handing out brochures to promote the city.
Asked what he got out of his service, he replied, "The satisfaction of helping my city".
He went on to say, "This may sound corny to some people, but believe in your subject and have a love for Bendigo".
Since October last year, Mr Docksey has been living at the Bendigo Retirement Village in Spring Gully.
Yesterday, he received an award in recognition of his generous service.
