Magistrate Jennifer Tregent opted to fine Timothy Ridge $5000.
The sentence brought an immediate response on social media with people angry the offender didn't get a far harsher penalty for his actions.
But was that response motivated by the 'on-edge' climate in which the world now finds itself?
Timothy Ridge was stupid - that can't be denied. But these pipe bombs were made of plastic not metal, he had zero intention of hurting anyone and certainly didn't set them off in a crowd.
When he became aware of their potential he abandoned the last device although he should have picked a better place than a bar.
In this Google era, Timothy Ridge will live with his actions forever - there will be fallout.
The embarrassment this entire episode has brought on him and his family should send a clear message to anyone considering a similar 'prank' of the real consequences.
The seriousness of this incident should not be dismissed but we need to keep perspective on the true level of the crime.
