The 52-year-old driver was towing a trailer towards Kangaroo Flat in the 100km/h zone on the Bendigo-Lockwood Road when he lost control of the wheel.
"It appears the driver hasn't negotiated the turn on a left-hand bend," Senior Constable David Sanders said.
"He has driven straight, crossing to the wrong side of the road, hitting the railing and rolling the car and trailer."
Senior Constable Sanders said the car finished on its roof after crashing through three wooden poles and about 15 metres of railing.
A first aid trainer and nurse were first on the scene and helped the man from his car.
"He has gone down the embankment to end up on the roof," he said.
"He was lucky. There could have been a car or truck coming the other way and it would have been a different story."
The man received lacerations to his forehead and right arm which required stitches.
Senior Constable Sanders said drugs and alcohol were no factor in the crash.
Police will continue their investigations.
