MITIAMO and YCW both overcame three quarter-time deficits to win their Loddon Valley Football League games on Sunday.
The Superoos defeated Pyramid Hill for the first time since 2009 after coming from 15 points down at the last change to win by eight points at Mitiamo.
The Superoos kicked 3.6 to 0.1 in the final term to prevail 9.14 (68) to 8.12 (60).
“We still had a lot of belief at three quarter-time,” Mitiamo coach Denis Grinton said.
“I thought out effort around the footy was great all day, but our execution at times with hand and foot was fairly ordinary because of the conditions.
“But we kept chipping away at it and in the end, were able to get on top through weight of footy going into our forward half.
“It was a very pleasing result.”
The best on ground medal was awarded to Mitiamo veteran Tim Wicks, who lined up on Pyramid Hill coach Paul Grayling in defence.
Midfielders Doug Thomas and Terrence Reeves both won plenty of the ball and ruckman Michael I’Anson was also influential.
Since their upset loss to Inglewood in round two, the Superoos have bounced back with consecutive wins over Newbridge and Pyramid Hill.
The defeat was the Bulldogs’ first of the season, with the side led by Danko Bzenic, Dylan Morison and Balraj Singh. Sam Kennedy kicked four of Pyramid Hill’s eight goals.
• YCW won its first game of the season after over-running Inglewood at Backhaus Oval.
The Blues led by 12 points at three quarter-time, but couldn’t withstand the Eagles’ charge as YCW kicked four goals to two in the final term to win 11.14 (80) to 11.7 (73).
Earlier, Inglewood had jumped out of the blocks to build a 26-point advantage at quarter-time, 4.4 to 0.2.
David Millard, Steve Turner, Mitch Collins and Callum Tardrew played well for the Eagles, who had Cohen Kekich kick three goals.
Craig Crichton and Shane Harris each kicked three goals for the Blues and were both among their best players.
• For the third time in its opening four games, Bridgewater dished out a hiding of more than 20 goals.
This time it was arch-rival Newbridge that was on the end of the Bridgewater battering.
The Mean Machine conceded just two goals in winning by 129 points, 21.18 (144) to 2.3 (15), at Laser Plumbing Bendigo Oval.
“We set ourselves during the week to play a ruthless brand of footy and that’s what we did,” Bridgewater coach Andrew Collins said.
Just as it did against YCW in round one, Bridgewater held Newbridge goalless in the first half, by which stage it was already 84 points up.
Collins was dominant for the Maroons with a haul of goals and now has 20 for the season.
The Mean Machine had 11 other goalkickers, among them Marc Lindsay and Tom Broadbent, who were also standouts.
Newbridge is now the only team without a win and is in the rare position of sitting last.
Nathan Bacon, Jordan Gilboy and Lachlan Ford battled hard against the odds on a tough day for the Maroons, who were held to their lowest score for at least 20 years.
• Marong proved too strong for Calivil United, defeating the Demons by 24 points at Calivil.
A six-goal to two second term helped set up the Panthers’ 13.12 (90) to 8.18 (66) victory.
Lachlan Frankel booted five goals for the Panthers, whose key contributors also included defender Josh Griffin, Richard Tibbett, Kyle Manley and Braden Hender.
In the Demons’ second loss in a row, Ben Knight, ruckman Chris Down, Caleb Smith and Anthony Dennis (two goals) were solid.
