Mr Holmes served in Iraq and Afghanistan during the 2000s as an armourer and was an active member of the Wedderburn Korong Vale RSL sub-branch.
On Saturday, his brother Paul, son Mathew, sister Maree St Clair, nephews and other extended family came together to remember Mr Holmes at the dawn service in Bendigo.
He would participate in every Anzac Day and Remembrance Day since arriving in Wedderburn in 2013.
Ms St Clair said they wanted to support each other and to remember Greg.
"We're just trying to do something special and to help us all get through this situation," she said.
"Greg was always at Anzac Day, he would always make sure to attend."
