Artist Laura van der Spek is seeking offers for the work with a goal of breaking even on the project.
"I honestly don't have anywhere left to keep sculptures at my home," she said.
"The council gave me enough money to cover my materials to make the tail but I still need to pay for my firing costs at the university.
"So I'm a little bit in debt but it was fun."
On the plus side, Mrs van der Spek said the enterprise had meant she now had somewhere to work on future projects.
"After all the publicity it got (La Trobe) are happy to let me keep using their work spaces for free, so now I have somewhere to make everything," she said.
"I'm a full time artist but I don't make any money at the moment, so I'm trying to find a job as a teacher."
Mrs van der Spek said potential buyers would have an opportunity to view the work later in the week.
"If anyone does want to have a look at the tail up close I will be removing it from Lake Weeroona at 9am Friday," she said.
"If somebody has a nice home in mind I'd like it to go somewhere where people will show him the same love that I've shown him."
Meanwhile, she'll keep brainstorming for next year.
