IT HAS been said that the well-being of a community can be measured by the suicide rate, and the way we treat our children, the sick, frail and disadvantaged.

So now we have a 1000-seat theatre. I feel ashamed after reading about the plight of local families (Bendigo Advertiser, April 18) and their desperate plea for help in caring for loved ones with disabilities.
The most dedicated people among us are those who care for the disadvantaged. Their struggle is simply not adequately appreciated.
I am told that the substantial facility being the aquatic centre at Eaglehawk is substantially underutilised, as are the other two main pools in Bendigo.
The local community built the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre in the 1980s. It is a sound and substantial building and is well used. It could do with a tidy up at little cost.
The timber floor in the main hall is one of the finest, and probably could be heritage listed. To destroy this building would be a disgraceful and arrogant waste.
If people need to get fitter, and many of us do, we should get out of the couch and exercise, drink more water, and eat lesser amounts and better quality food.
There is enough financial wealth in the Bendigo community to provide decent facilities and services to look after those in such desperate need. We just have to stop being wasteful and selfish.
Those of us who have capacity have a responsibility to look after those who do not. There is evidence to suggest that helping others is healthy for us also.
We claim to be a modern and sophisticated community. Should the carers of our sick and disabled really have to beg for help?
