Antony James Woodward walked into the One Tree Hill Hotel on Retreat Road in Spring Gully on Friday, April 10 at about 2.45pm.
He appeared disoriented and had an obvious head injury.
Staff recognised Mr Woodward, who is a regular at the One Tree Hill Hotel.
Concerned for his welfare, staff at the hotel took Mr Woodward to his house where his condition worsened.
He was then taken to Bendigo Base Hospital.
There, Mr Woodward was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain and medical staff found bruising around his body and a swollen jaw.
Mr Woodward has been transferred to The Alfred hospital and remains there in an induced coma.
Police were notified of the incident due to the nature of Mr Woodward's injuries and an investigation was commenced.
It is unclear whether Mr Woodward's injuries were sustained in an assault or a fall.
Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Col Grenfell said Mr Woodward was a loner who kept to himself.
“Antony is a local Spring Gully man who kept pretty much to himself, he didn’t drive and walked everywhere,” he said.
“Whenever he was out walking he always had one of those green shopping bags with him.
Detective Grenfell encouraged anyone who may know what happened to Mr Woodward in the hours before he presented at the hotel to come forward.
“We urge anyone who has any information on Antony’s movements prior to him arriving at the hotel to come forward so we can work out what might have happened to him," he said.
“His injuries are considered to be serious, possibly life threatening, so it is important we find out how they occurred.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or they can file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
