Joshua Stewart Hamilton faced the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Wednesday on charges over the thefts in August and October last year.
On both occasions he ran from the scene when confronted by staff.
The court heard he stole the Xbox One game Watch Dogs from Harvey Norman on August 24.
Police were required to chase Hamilton down Mitchell Street after he stole the $69.95 bottle of whiskey from Dan Murphy's on October 10.
When he was arrested, police also found three small ziplock bags of ice and two grams of cannabis in his possession.
The court heard Hamilton had suffered a severe drug problem for two years, but since his arrest he had been clean.
He was sentenced to 61 days in custody for the theft charges, and fined $500 for possession of ice and cannabis.
He has already served the 61 days in custody and will provide a DNA sample.
Hamilton remains in custody to face the Bendigo County Court at a later date on other matters.
