LAMB numbers increased by about 25 per cent as selling resumed after the Easter break, with the dry conditions also an influencing factor in the larger yarding.
While the usual group of buyers were in attendance, demand was patchy and the trade and export slaughter lambs were generally cheaper compared to the previous sale held a fortnight ago.
The better bred and finished lambs maintained their value the best, while secondary types were the most affected by the selective bidding.
The market also weakened as it progressed, causing more price fluctuations. The market reached a top of $178 for heavy export lambs estimated at around 33kg cwt, and it was one of only three sales above $170/head.
Light weight lambs (14kg to 18kg cwt) sold to strong demand at $75 to $96/head for most and they were the only category to be consistently dearer than a fortnight ago.
There was restocker support from Horsham, Finley, Shepparton, Wycheproof and the local area and they paid to $109 for first-cross ewe lambs, while a feature run of young longer wooled Merino ewe lambs from the Riverina sold to $106.50/head.
The general run of store lambs, however, made from $52 to $96/head.
The lead pens of heavy domestic lambs sold from $120 to $132, but the market fluctuated for plainly bred and finished lambs weighing 20-22kg cwt, with these pens generally making from $100 to $116/head. The 26-28kg cwt export lambs sold from $135 to $154, while extra heavy lambs sold from $155 to $165, with just a few pens over $170/head.
On a carcass basis a range of 500¢ to 530¢ covered most of the better quality trade and export lambs; however, there were sales of extra heavy types and secondary lambs below 500¢/kg cwt.
The mutton sale was the highlight of the day, with sheep generally gaining $5 to $10/head on pre-Easter rates.
Heavy ewes consistently sold above $100, reaching a top of $119.20, while Merino wethers sold to $118/head.
Most mutton was estimated at costing processors 350¢ to 380¢, with select pens out to 400¢ /kg cwt.
Producers please note: All lambs and sheep presented for sale must be curfewed before transport in line with industry standards. Lambs and sheep should be crutched and well presented for sale. Current 2013 NVDs should be filled in and completed correctly. If you require any assistance with the new NVD, please contact your agent. NVDs must accompany all stock.
