MORE than 450 Bendigo performers, groups, choirs, musicians, dancers and schools are preparing for the opening of Ulumbarra Theatre.
The Light Up the Sky concert will be held on Saturday, April 18, and will included a performance by world-renowned jazz trumpter James Morrison.
Morrison will lead a combined schools and community brass band.
"I’m especially looking forward to working with local students as part of Ulumbarra’s community concert,” he said.
Morrison will also perform on Sunday night with the James Morrison Quintet.
The event will be a celebration for the community as the $25 million Ulumbarra project comes to fruition.
“I’ve been looking forward to this performance in particular” Capital Venues and Events manager David Lloyd said.
“Having so many community members on stage is exactly what Ulumbarra is all about.
"It is a place for people to gather together, and the Light Up the Sky Concert is the perfect example of that.”
Performers at the Light Up the Sky Concert will include the Bendigo Chinese Assoication Lion Team, The Bendigo Youth Choir, the Dja Dja Warrung Corporation, Fanfare Musicians, the Ulumbarra Orchestra, Alawishus Jones and the Outright Lies along with a host of dance ensembles and choirs.
There will also be performances from musical productions Ned and Mary Poppings as well as circus performances by the Camp Hill Short Circus All Stars and The Seduceaphones.
“Many hours have been put into this performance across numerous local groups who have been rehearsing for weeks for this special event,” Light Up the Sky concert co-ordinator Rohan Phillips said.
“Everyone is excited to finally bring all the pieces of this puzzle together when we start rehearsal in the venue next week.”
Sunday sees an opening day at Ulumbarra that features guided tours and free entertainment.
The opening day is free but bookings are essential.
