And the road to redemption begins on Friday against Kangaroo Flat at MyJet Oval in the opening round of the Bendigo Football League season.
After winning five-straight premierships, Golden Square last year bowed out when it was over-run by Gisborne in the first semi-final and beaten by four points.
"We don't hide from the fact - we failed big time last year and from my perspective, our output last year is not tolerated," Carter said on Thursday.
"We'll be keeping that in the back of our minds this year because it keeps us honest. It wasn't a season where we feel we can look back on and say we had a win.
"We take individual positives out of the year in that we developed some young kids, but as a team we failed.
"If you can't learn and grow from your failures, then you won't succeed. We need to make amends and it starts on Friday against Kangaroo Flat."
After last year's "failure", Golden Square is being touted as one of the biggest threats to Strathfieldsaye's bid for back-to-back flags after an active recruiting campaign that among it has landed a much sought-after key forward in Ryan Herring.
As part of the build-up to the 2015 season, Golden Square's senior and junior clubs came together last weekend for a joint family day aimed at building one culture.
"The purpose of the event was to bring the whole club together as one, introduce new people and prepare for what is going to be a big 2015," Golden Square president Col Rosa said.
Kangaroo Flat will be aiming to start its new season by ending a run of 28-consecutive losses against Golden Square stretching back to 2001.
"It has been far too long. Kangaroo Flat people consider the Golden Square game a rivalry, but rivalries are built on close matches and shared victories between opponents, but it's certainly not that way," Stevens said.
"Golden Square has dominated our footy club and that's something we want to fix, and that's stage one in us earning back some respect in the competition."
Stevens was expecting to include nine new players in Kangaroo Flat's round one side, although, one that will be missing is ruckman Jeremy Lambden, who had hip surgery during the off-season and will be out early.
"We're playing it conservative with a 21-year-old ruckman. It's a marathon, not a sprint and we want to make sure we have him right and ready to go at the end of the year," Stevens said.
The Roos also have Jayke Barrack unavailable.
Meanwhile, the Roos need more players for their under-18 team.
The Roos' under-18s train Tuesday and Thursday nights at Bendigo Mazda Oval.
