A runner-up in the classic on two previous occasions, including last year's race, Buchanan goes into the 1603m duel fitter and stronger this time.
The climb at View Street does not faze Buchanan as some of this summer's training was at Falls Creek.
Since a training camp at Falls, Buchanan's focus was more on 1500m than longer distances.
Highs were victory in the A-grade 1500m at a Melbourne Milers Meet at Box Hill and fastest time in the Richard Kitt Memorial at the Bendigo International Madison.
"The times I have run have really lifted my confidence," Buchanan said of the lead-up to the Bendigo Harriers-organised Dragon Mile.
"Confidence plays a massive part in athletics. A year ago I was not as fit," he said of being passed by Jack Rayner at 150m to go.
"In any race it's about a strong start and finish."
Athletics plays a big part in Buchanan's life.
He is specialist coach in athletics for the Athlete Development Program at Bendigo South East Secondary College.
"It's fantastic working with like-minded athletes. It's a really positive environment and the work ethic of the students is inspirational."
The first of six races on the Dragon Mile card is at 11am on Easter Sunday.
