Earlier in the month, Melanie Burke, husband Travis and their three children made the difficult decision to put Honey, their Labrador, to sleep because of an illness.
The Burkes planned to bury Honey at a property two hours from their home because their yard was too small.
However, Mrs Burke said the family changed their minds and decided on cremation because they wanted to be able to visit the dog whenever they needed.
Mrs Burke said she made an appointment at McIvor Road Veterinary Centre, who euthanased Honey.
The pet was then sent to Melbourne to be cremated.
When Mrs Burke went to collect Honey's ashes the following week, she was told by staff they, "were not sure where (she'd) gone".
"I just kept thinking how unlucky I was and this would only happen to me," Mrs Burke said.
"My husband rang up the next morning to find out what had happened. They said there had been a mistake and Honey had been buried in a mass dog grave in Melbourne.
"I am absolutely devastated, distraught, angry and confused. I have three children who adored that dog. This should not happen. Just because it's an animal, it's still a member of the family."
McIvor Road Veterinary Centre owner Sue Collins said the mistake was made through a mis-communication among staff and it was human error which had led to Honey being buried.
"It was not deliberate and there was no intent to cause harm. It was human error," she said.
"These things happen from time to time. We apologise to the Burke family and did not mean to do this."
Ms Collins said the Burke family received a full refund on Friday.
She said she had spoken with the company who performed the burial and said there was a high chance they could exhume Honey and return his ashes to the Burkes.
Mrs Burke said she just wanted her dog back.
"Honey is a family member. What's happened is excusable I just want her back," she said.
