There are very few other examples of social involvement so selflessly given, than the time given voluntarily by Mark Werogoda - and yet one private indiscretion has earned him the wrath of so many, including the editor of this newspaper.
Every day of every year, politicians deceive, lie and deflect issues in order to play for time to prepare their strategies/defences, and yet the deep embarrassment earned by our city councillor was given next to no time before the ungrateful and unappreciative hounds were “gnawing at him”.
Shame Bendigo!
Admittedly Cr Werogoda made stupid decisions on this occasion, and nobody will regret them more than he will (to be caught drink-driving earns far more reaching penalties than serious criminal acts), but I do not believe it to be the prerogative of any other bumptious accuser to castigate him any further.
His actions should have absolutely nothing to do with the execution of his civic duties, or any “smothering” code of conduct, often called upon for point-scoring purposes.
He is a private citizen who has generously offered a large portion of his time for the benefit of the people of Bendigo -- appreciate it, Bendigo.
The good done for, and to, this community far outweighs any minor indiscretion that may offend nobody apart from himself, and the superficial “do-gooders” who delight in throwing stones, while often having ghosts of their own locked in closets.
Let’s all be fair, forgiving and gracious – and appreciative.
