The Victorian Volleyball League club has recruited five Bendigo players for this season.
Michael Mayes, Guy Hickman, Oliver Harriott, Lachie Preece and Scott Woodman have joined the Phantoms.
They will be playing alongside brothers Matt and Josh Gordon and Adrian Fox, as they aim to win a spot in the league’s finals after missing out in 2014.
Western Phantoms Volleyball Club president and player Matt Gordon said it was great to see so many Bendigo athletes decide to take up the challenge of playing in the Victorian competition.
"Bendigo has one of the strongest country based areas in the state, so it is great to have finally cracked the talent pool here," he said.
"We have four Bendigo Academy of Sport athletes making the step up into either the premier or reserves teams.
"We lost a couple of players from last year, so these new players will fit right in."
Last year the VVL scheduled a round of the competition in Bendigo.
Gordon believes because of that, so many local players decided to try their luck in the highly ranked league.
"This year another round of the VVL will be in Bendigo on May 16," he said.
"We are also looking ahead to 2016.
"As well as getting more males from Bendigo to play in the league, we are hoping to attract more females to play next year."
Gordon said he was looking forward to their first game against Victoria University on Saturday.
"Last season we only trained together as a group once and we finished just short of the finals, this year already we have had three training camps, so we are already in a better spot," he said.
