I AM writing in support of the mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo, Councillor Peter Cox, in his letter of March 21 ("Future of the 'Addy'") concerning the possible staff cuts of one of the world's oldest newspapers, the Bendigo Advertiser, which has been published since 1853.

I have been reading the Addy since my arrival in Bendigo in 1975 and have always admired its role in reporting the many facets of Bendigo life.
Today's staff is a splendid mixture of experience and youth from editors, day-to-day journalists, sports writers, photographers and special features writers, supported by an array of able managers, who have combined to make this city the envy of regional Australia.
I sincerely hope the Fairfax organisation can see the potential damage to a Bendigo institution if the mooted changes take place.
