The band began as three mates just writing songs together. Three years later they started playing them and have since featured on Triple J and at music festivals around the country.
“We didn’t really have a need to play live, it wasn’t about that (in the beginning),” DMA’s acoustic guitarist Johnny Took said.
“We started about four years ago and spent about three years just writing.
“We were just having fun getting wasted and playing and recording tunes. It didn’t feel like we needed more than that.”
Took who provides much of the rhythm for the DMA’s tracks said the trio formed through playing in other bands.
“Me and Tommy were playing in another band and I had been writing with Mason separately,” Took said.
“When Mason and Tommy got to know each other we got into the productions side of stuff and were always hanging out at lock ins at the Annandale (Hotel).
“We have always been busy and it kind of wasn’t for a long time that we thought we were a band.”
DMA’s prides itself on its raw garage pop sound that originally came from recording in a bedroom.
“It was nice to play some rock and roll. Mason provides a great harmony and it’s nice to have a singer like Tommy who doesn’t hit bum notes that often,” Took said.
“My role is much more rhythm and a bit more behind the scenes recording and stuff.
“The sound is really pop melody and recorded in a bedroom without soundproofing or anything."
After GTM in April and May, DMA’s will head to the UK for the festival circuit including Reading and Leeds.
They have also played at Falls Festival and Took played at the Kyneton Music with another band earlier this year.
“Kyneton was very cool because I love travelling to places I have never been before,” he said.
“We also did Falls, which was sick but a bit weird because we literally flew down for Lorne, jumped in a van, drove in and drank some beers, played and pissed off back to Sydney.
"I think GTM will be a lot less hectic than that.”
