CENTRAL Victorian duck hunters have defended themselves against claims of inappropriate and dangerous behaviour at a duck hunting site near Maldon.
Earlier this month the Bendigo Advertiser reported the concerns of a group of Cairn Curran residents who claimed hunters acted irresponsibly by camping illegally and leaving dead and dying ducks littered around the reservoir.
The residents, who were petitioning for the cancellation of the 2015 duck hunting season, claimed to be victims of intimidation by shooters.
Field and Game Australia Bendigo branch spokesman Danny Ryan refuted the claims.
He said he was unaware of any inappropriate or intimidating behaviour by shooters.
"Our members regularly hunt the Cairn Curran reservoir and surrounding central Victorian area and have not reported any such activity," he said.
"In fact our members report they often clean up the foreshore areas after other reservoir users."
Mr Ryan said hunting was a highly regulated activity. He said residents should feel comfortable raising concerns with hunters.
"Residents around the Cairn Curran area should be mindful that they do not own the foreshore below the high watermark," he said.
"We would welcome any interaction with any resident who has concerns about hunting activity on the reservoir."
Mr Ryan said also took aim at RSPCA Victoria, which he said had "become progressively infiltrated by extreme animal liberationists".
He said the RSPCA's argument that the 2015 duck hunting season should be cancelled because of low duck numbers was flawed.
"Australia's base population stock of game birds rarely changes as it moves where the water is; birds have wings and they use them," he said.
The Victorian duck hunting season opens March 21.
