Mueck followed up his course record 64 on Thursday with a four-under par 68 in Friday’s second round.
He shares the lead with Kiwi Josh Geary, who fired a second-straight six-under par 66.
Mueck and Geary are one shots in advance of New South Wales’ Jordan Zunic, with Geoff Drakeford and Matthew Millar a further two shots adrift.
"It was a completely different day, it rained heaps and was quite windy as times, it was pretty hard to replicate yesterday," Mueck told pga.org.au
"But I am definitely happy with how I played today, I struggled around and I'm still in the hunt.
"Obviously being in front isn't a bad position and I'm playing quite nicely so I'll take confidence into tomorrow."
