NOISES Off, by the Bendigo Theatre Company is in no way simple... or quiet!
In fact, it is quite the opposite.
A noisy concoction of personalities clashing to create a harmonious and hilarious roller coaster of anecdotes and awkward silences.
The show, I am sure, is not simple for the actors and actresses to execute.
Nor is it simple to explain to someone who hasn't witnessed it for themselves.
The first scene depicts a play called Nothing On being rehearsed by a bunch of rag tag actors and stage staff.
The second scene is a literal connection between front and back of house.
The set rotates 180 degrees revealing the slightly shabby backstage view of a set.
As I watched from behind-the-scenes I saw and heard the first act of the play occur through the set windows.
It's confusing and brilliant.
The confusion leaves you laughing at yourself and the actors in front of you.
The characters were so well-developed that I felt I was a part of a hugely dysfunctional family.
... laughing at yourself and the actors in front of you.
The minimalist cast completely absorbed the width of the stage in an act of mere athleticism as they jovially run from one end to the other.
Noises Off follows the demise of more than just one actor and lifts up a whole audience.
The stage the audience sees is not all it's cracked up to be, it's more.
And cracking up was only the start of it, there were tears of joy.
I know that in the future I will see the connection between what the audience sees and what really happens.
Noises Off opens tonight at 8pm at the BTC Arts Shed at 15-17 Allingham Street, Golden Square.
It is sold out for Friday, March 6, Saturday, March 7, Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14.
There are limited tickets left for the matinee show on Sunday, March 15.
Due to popular demand an extra show has been added on Thursday, March 12 at 8pm.
