St Pauls launches midweek service

St Paul’s Cathedral in Bendigo is launching a new midweek service in the hope of attracting people who play sport or prefer a sleep-in on Sunday mornings.

The service will be held every Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm and led by the Reverend Gordon Lingard with the support of his wife Judy.

Mr Lingard said he aimed for a “relaxed, relational” service.

“It’s going to be a creative type of service, simple contemporary songs and a relevant message you can apply to your life... Everything church hopes to be normally, but I would call it a fresh expression of church.”

Mr Lingard said Sunday congregations were declining and he hoped to woo back some time-poor parishioners.

“The tag line is: ‘when you can’t make Sunday and even when you can’,” he said.

“It’s very open and inclusive.”

Mr Lingard said he travelled around Victoria building up new congregations.

“I meet many people who have a faith in God but they find church a challenging place to be,” he said.

“If you look at the numbers you will see a move away from people going to church, but you do see people meeting in a house or other places.

“We want to set up an environment for people to feel relaxed as they express their faith.

“I think church needs a multi-entry point. This is just another entry point.”
