Mackenzie street resident Roz Effenberg said the initiative, which had its genesis in Ballarat, was fantastic for Bendigo.
"I'm just about to plant some garlic and I've been harvesting parsley seeds so I put some of those in the basket," she said.
"I've had a few things taken so that’s really good, it's a really nice thing."
Ms Effenberg said the Food is Free concept's popularity had surged since a drop off and collection point was established at Happy Valley and Marong Roads in February.
"At first everybody was worried that there'd just be people who would take and they had to encourage people to give because without the giving there’s nothing for people to take, but now it's taken off so much," she said.
"Up there there’ll be the table absolutely groaning and that can be replaced twice in one day."
More Food Is Free Day's are planned for the first Sunday of every month.
