AT first glance I didn’t think Elise Chapman deserved the oxygen of a reply to her horrendous and ignorant tweet, but after reading public comments that followed the online article “Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman tweets genital mutilation image to mosque supporter” in Thursday’s Bendigo Advertiser, it’s clear many people are seriously uninformed and may make good participants for the show “Go Back to Where You Came From” – they may learn something about different cultures and religions.

I’m the first to speak up about the despicable practise of female genital mutilation, but mentioning this act in reaction to the building of a mosque in Bendigo makes no sense at all - there is no connection.
Many followers of Islam disagree with FGM and it’s a cultural rather than religious practice – it was being carried out in North African countries before Islam was even established.
It has been a few years since I read the Quran but I don’t recall a verse promoting FGM – can you enlighten us, Ms Chapman?
Have you ever met a Muslim person? Visited their home? Discussed FGM with them?
Building a mosque in Bendigo will not mean residents of the city will be mutilated in any way, it simply means there will be a beautiful building where people can go to pray.
In my opinion, this woman should be sacked from council because insulting residents of the city she represents, spouting such disgusting words and tweeting images of babies bleeding from their genitals in response to people attempting to build a place of worship is appalling behaviour.
Let’s use these haters to fuel our determination to get this mosque built!
