Passing VicRoads crews provided traffic control while workers reattached the trailer and secured the load.
The truck was turning into Napier Street from Powell Street - in front of Weeroona College - when the trailer became detached.
The trailer did not collide with any nearby infrastructure but did damage the surface of the road.
UPDATE 3.00PM: Workers have reattached the trailer, which was carrying a large excavator at the time.
Traffic is still restricted in the northbound direction on Napier Street.
The excavator is being secured on the trailer.
Napier Street has sustained damage but there appears to be no impact on power supply or other utilities.
EARLIER: VICROADS workers have blocked the northbound side of Napier Street in front of Weeroona College after a trailer became detached from a truck this afternoon.
It is unknown how the trailer became detached at this point.
Police have yet to arrive of the scene.
Napier Street is blocked in one direction from Powell Street.
