In that year, Kingswood has recorded and released its debut album and are back on the road again to promote it.
The band plays at the Black Swan Hotel in Bendigo with supports (and fellow GTM alumni) Lurch and Chief and My Echo on Thursday, March 12.
“The tour has just been excellent, we’re having a ball,” lead singer Fergus Linacre said.
“We played Albury last Sunday and love how people from regional areas make the shows such big events.
“We like to get involved in the towns (we visit) and are pumped to get back to Bendigo.”
Linacre said indie rock band Lurch and Chief played with Kingswood about 18 months ago and, like Lurch and Chief have come a long way.
“We pick the supports ourselves and love the stuff they’re doing,” Linacre said.
“They have been doing well with their EP and knew they would be a good fit on the road.”
Kingswood’s debut album, Microscopic Wars was recorded in Nashville with producer Vance Powell.
The experience was one that every band would hope for on a debut album.
“It was the most ever. We saved all our money, worked our asses off and tried to push a few boundaries ,” Linacre said.
“We just wanted to make an interesting record and didn’t think of how it would be perceived.
“Vance made us feel free and relaxed and in pushing boundaries - that’s how we ended up with a song like Piece by Piece that has a banjo and synthesiser in it.
“If you had of told me I would be recording something like that months ago I would have said you were crazy.”
Kingswood have been together for almost eight years, so the debut album is a great reward for persistance.
“It took a long time to record the first album. Our manager became ill so we postponed music, which meant we got a lot better,” Linacre said.
“But I didn’t think we felt liek a real band until we had an album, something we can say this is what our band is.”
Microscopic Wars has been very well received with Kingswood featuring twice in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 countdown.
It is a refelction of how popular the band's music has become and why they deserve their long-awaited success.
“We have been really rapt with the response. You never know what can happen with a first album,” Linacre said.
“When it came time to release it we expected people to be a bit put off. We expected the hard rock fans to be disappointed but I'm thinking we won those guys over.
“We have loved hearing stories about how much people enjoyed it. One person said (a song) was played at a funeral.
“When music means something to you it’s a great feeling but to have created something that means that much to someone else is amazing.”
