The talented teenager won a bronze medal in the under-17 men's time trial.
Buckell was third, behind his Victorian team-mate and winner Godfrey Slattery and second placegetter Kai Chapman from New South Wales.
Buckell's brother Sam and fellow Bendigo rider Amber Lyons is also contesting at the titles.
The championships are being held at Melbourne's Darebin International Sports Centre.
Competition will run until Saturday.
