The business has bought 15,000 red balloons, 10,000 of which will be given away by the Bendigo Advertiser and 5000 for the National Red Balloon Day committee to sell.  

The national day, which falls on February 28 - the last day of summer - aims to recognise the efforts of firies - both career and volunteer - across the country.  

Australians are encouraged to purchase a red balloon and display it out the front of their homes as a symbol of thanks. Bendigo Mazda's Richard Opie said it was a simple gesture but meaningful nonetheless.

Mr Opie said when the business was approached to support the national event, there was no hesitation. 

"We got the opportunity to jump on board, to thank the firies for what they do and when the opportunity came up we jumped on it," he said. 

"We appreciate their work, it's not an easy job and a lot of them are doing it in their own time. It's an opportunity for us to give a bit back."

Mr Opie encouraged Bendigo residents to get involved in the cause and say thanks to the firefighters.

He said Bendigo Mazda tried to give back to the community through various fundraiser and events. 

"We sponsor a lot of sporting clubs and community events, community is good for us and good to us, so we try and give back," Mr Opie said. 

National Red Balloon Day founder Jody Hardiman said the support from Bendigo Mazda was terrific. 

A community celebration will be held in Bendigo's Civic Gardens on February 28 from 11am to 3pm. 

It will include a display by the Country Fire Authority and other activities, including face painting and a raffle.

Merchandise includes balloons, stubbie holders and bumper stickers.
