The lessons were part of the Bendigo Instrumental Music Program's recruitment drive, where students get to experience learning a musical instrument.
Students, from year seven to 12, rotated through groups, learning the drums, trombone, flute and more.
Percussion teacher and program co-ordinator Gavan Moncrieff said there were many benefits to learning to play a musical instrument.
"Studies shows music stimulates different parts of the brain, so it's good for student learning," he said.
"It's also good to learn an instrument and we want to promote that too.
"The more students in our learning program, the better the result for the students."
Students who sign up for the program participate in lessons as well as ensembles. They also get to compete.
It covers all Bendigo public secondary schools.
Mr Moncrieff said interested students should contact their music co-ordintor for details.
