A PETITION calling on the federal government and ABC to broadcast WNBL matches beyond this season gathered almost 2000 signatures in three weeks.
Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters tabled the petition in parliament on Wednesday after it was accepted by the standing committee on petitions.
Ms Chesters gathered the 1974 signatures at the last three Bendigo Spirit matches, as well as at her shopping centre listening posts.
She said the feedback from players, supporters and several members of the Bendigo Spirit board had been fantastic.
"What really struck me was how many fathers of daughters were passionate about having the sport stay on television," Ms Chesters said.
"It was just the anger when people thought, 'Hang on a minute, if I want to watch women's basketball, I'm not going to be able to anymore'."
The ABC made the decision to stop broadcasting the WNBL and W-League from the end of the current seasons.
The decision came after the federal government cut $254 million from the ABC budget, Ms Chesters said.
She will also write to the ministers for sport and communications informing them of the petition from Bendigo.
Ms Chesters said she was planning to bring together all MPs whose electorate includes a WNBL team to protest the decision to stop broadcasting women's sport.
