Chasing Ballarat’s total of 8-226, Bendigo looked in control when Taylor (64) and Bowles (65) added 121 for the third wicket.
When they were dismissed in quick succession it sparked a middle-order collapse of 4-17.
Bendigo was saved by big-hitting all-rounder Adrian Pappin, who smashed an unbeaten 53.
Bendigo required 18 off the final two overs and then eight off the final six balls, with Pappin and Adam Burns getting Bendigo home with one ball to spare.
Bendigo coach Matt Pinniger said the clash against Ballarat was a confidence-booster ahead of next week’s Melbourne Country Week carnival.
“We made it harder for ourselves than it should have been, but in the end it was good to get a win leading into next week,’’ Pinniger said.
“If it wasn’t for some lusty hitting from Pappin we probably wouldn’t have won the game.
“We lost our way there for a while, but we fought hard to get the win and we showed some character which is pleasing for the group as far as Country Week is concerned.”
White Hills’ youngster Brayden Stepien (25) was the only other Bendigo batsman to reach double figures.
Stepien’s opening partner Ben Gunn fell for a first ball duck.
Pinniger said Bendigo’s bowlers needed to sharpen up for the carnival.
“Adam Burns (1-31 off 10 overs) and Ben Devanny (2-44 off 10 overs) were good with the ball, Ben DeAraugo bowled well (1-21 off seven overs), but as a group we bowled too many wides,’’ Pinniger said.
“We bowled 11 wides, which probably equated to 20 runs on the turnaround, and all of a sudden we’re chasing 227 instead of 210.
“When it comes down to needing eight off the last over to win, limiting your extras when you bowl is so crucial. It makes a huge difference.”
Bendigo's Melbourne Country Week campaign starts on Monday against Murray Valley at Windy Hill.
