MORE COVERAGE: Marist College Bendigo students enjoy their first day
MAIDEN Gully is enjoying an historic moment this morning as students begin to arrive for the first day at the new Marist College Bendigo.
The years 7 and 8 buildings are ready to take in the 220 students.
Principal Darren McGregor spoke to students about the journey to bring the school to fruition.
"For the last 18 months, it's just been a building. It's just been a car park," he said.
"It's great to see life flow into these buildings."
Both parents and students arriving on the first day spoke of the excitement of being a part of the founding class at the new school.
Pauline Hill said she was pleased with the design of the new school and its focus on personal development.
"The fact that the teachers have shown that they care about each and every student is something that's a real positive," she said.
"My daughter loves the fact that she's a founding student and has the responsibility of setting the standard for other year levels to come."
Others were pleased to have another Catholic option close to where they live.
Parents Kym Moro and Cathy Nagy both chose Marist for their children because it was closer to their homes in Kangaroo Flat.
"It also looks very nice, very inviting," Mrs Moro said.
Mrs Nagy said it would be a positive for the Maiden Gully community.
"I think once it's finished it will be good for everyone living around the school," she said.
The first day of the school year can be a drag for some students, but not for those walking through the Marist gates for the first time.
Friends Chloe Pangrazio, Gianna Moro and Jarrenhy Webb were excited to see what the first day had to offer.
"It's exciting to be at a new school, with all new facilities," Chloe said.
