Camp Hill Primary School's grade one students have come back a year wiser knowing what's expected of them.
The school's 57 preps will start tomorrow and principal Leonie Roberts said they would need time to adjust to the new environment.
Ms Roberts said many preps found it difficult to be away from family and to stay focused for the whole day.
Girton Grammar prep teacher Michael Robertson said preps had to learn what to eat when.
Mr Robertson said it was a "first world problem", but preps had to know, "when do I eat my sandwhich".
He said students differed in how quickly they settled into school and that those with big families or older siblings already attending school tended to be more comfortable on their first day.
Mr Robertson said a child's attendance at kinder or creche during their pre-school years was good preparation.
"It's not always a predictor, but definitely when they are starting to get to know other kids it's a big help," he said.
Girton Grammar prep student Charlotte Garner was enthusiastic about her first day.
In a charming self-portraint Charlotte drew herself standing in a park with a big dress and a tiara.
Asked if she could write her name, Charlotte replied,"not exactly".
"I need to keep practising my name," she said.
Willem de Vries said his favourite part of school was being with friends.
"My friends are here and one my kinder friends is even in my class," he said.
Meanwhile, Eaglehawk Primary preps bravely stepped through the school gates for the very first time, with a mixture of excitement and nerves on display - from parents and children alike.
