Two fire brigades attended a fire on the train line near Glenalbyn at 4.45pm on Wednesday.
Units quickly extinguished the fire, which burnt four sleepers on the track.
The fire occurred on a bridge over Ryan Creek, south of Wedderburn-Serpentine Road.
Wedderburn Fire Brigade First Lieutenant Rick Matthews said V/Line inspected the track after the fire and repairs would likely occur on Thursday.
He said nearby brigades responded quickly to the call out.
"We drove down south from the road, driving alongside the railway line," Mr Matthews said.
"All members did an outstanding job."
They extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes.
